What Drops does well

Let's start with the part that's easy to acknowledge: Drops has the best-looking vocabulary UX in the language-learning app category. The illustrations are bespoke, the swipe interactions are tactile, and the audio is recorded by native voice artists rather than synthesised or relabelled. For European Portuguese specifically, that audio matters — Drops did the work of recording a separate "Learn European Portuguese" track with EU-PT voice artists, sitting alongside its Brazilian Portuguese track on the official language list. That's rare in the category; many "Portuguese" apps quietly ship pt-BR with an EU-PT label.

The 5-minute session model is genuinely clever as a habit. The cap forces you to come back tomorrow rather than burn out in a one-hour binge that you'll skip the next three days. People who build a daily Drops habit do retain vocabulary — the spaced exposure works, even if Drops doesn't publish the SRS algorithm. The "Tough Word Dojo" feature on Premium specifically resurfaces words you missed, which is a sensible (if undocumented) take on spaced repetition.

Content breadth is real, too. Drops claims dozens of topical word lists per language — food, travel, body, work, family, business, even niche categories. Third-party reviewers estimate 3,000–5,000+ words per language, though Drops doesn't publish per-language counts. The illustrated mnemonics work especially well for concrete nouns; "carteira" with a wallet illustration sticks far better than "carteira = wallet" on a flashcard.

Finally, Drops is on every platform. Web, iOS, Android, with offline mode for Premium users. pt-drill is web-only — if you want vocabulary practice on a flight with no Wi-Fi, Drops Premium beats us on that axis cleanly.

Where Drops falls short for European Portuguese

Here's the wedge: Drops teaches zero grammar. This is not a complaint about a missing feature — it is, by design, what Drops is. The product is vocabulary-only. From FluentU's 2025 review:

For most languages this is a manageable trade-off. For European Portuguese it isn't. EU-PT has 10 tenses (presente, pretérito perfeito, pretérito imperfeito, futuro imperfeito, condicional, mais-que-perfeito, conjuntivo presente, conjuntivo imperfeito, conjuntivo futuro, imperativo — see our tenses guide), each with six person-forms including the archaic-but-still-tested vós. Vocabulary without conjugation cannot produce a grammatical sentence in this language. You can know the word "comer" cold and still be unable to say "we used to eat" without imperfect-tense practice.

The free tier compounds the problem. One 5-minute session every 10 hours — confirmed on Drops's own support pages — is too restricted to evaluate the content properly, let alone make progress. Effectively, Drops without Premium is a demo, not a tool. Premium is $11/month or $69.99 for the first year (then auto-renews higher), and a $150 lifetime option exists per the premium page. That's a real recurring cost for what is, fundamentally, a flashcard app with prettier flashcards.

Then there's the strategic concern. Drops was acquired by Kahoot! in November 2020 for $31M cash plus up to $19M in earnout. The press release promised deep integration with Kahoot!'s platform. Five and a half years later, languagedrops.com is still a standalone product, the "Kahoot! Drops" rebrand is nominal, and visible feature development has slowed. Reviewers like Portugalist note bluntly:

Where pt-drill is better

The simple, central answer: pt-drill teaches the part of European Portuguese that Drops refuses to touch — the verbs. All 10 tenses, all six person-forms (including vós for completeness), full paradigms per verb, with a spaced-repetition schedule per verb-tense pair. • No 5-minute cap. A focused 30-minute session before a CIPLE exam is fine. Drops free tier physically cannot do that.
• Free forever. No tier, no upsell, no "unlock topic" button. The app is hosted on free Cloudflare infrastructure precisely so it can stay free.
• EU-PT only. pt-drill has no Brazilian content to confuse you with. Every example, every conjugation, every audio note (if we ever add audio) is European Portuguese.
• Grammar reference built in. The tenses guide and in-app reference link directly to Vladimir Prus's canonical EU-PT grammar pages. The rules and the drill live in the same browser tab.
• Quiet. No streaks, no shame, no leagues. If you skip a day, nothing yells at you. The cards just wait.

And the cost calculus: Drops Lifetime is $150. pt-drill is $0, with no asterisks. If $150 buys you the prettier vocabulary trainer plus a tool that still can't conjugate, the value math is uncomfortable.

Who should pick which

Pick Drops if you want a 5-minute-a-day vocabulary habit with the most beautiful UX in the category, you can afford Premium ($69.99/year or $150 lifetime), and you have a separate plan for grammar — a textbook, a tutor, or a tool like pt-drill running alongside.

Pick pt-drill if European Portuguese verbs are your bottleneck (they usually are), you need a tool that actually drills conjugation across all 10 tenses, and you want it to be free and quiet.
